چکیده

PART II. COAL-MINERS HAVING established the behaviour of the normal subject when tested on the synoptophore under specified conditions of light adaptation and dark adaptation (Campbell and others, 1951), we have used the same methods to examine a large number of coal-miners (some 09htAdapted employed on the coal-face, and '60A some certified as suffering from / \ coal-miners' nystagmus). /# ' In our former observations (Campbell and others, 1948), the number of subjects available ~20 ./ \\ was too small for a detailed comparison, but it was obvious (a) Xc:< "(b) that normal coal-miners have ol . . . .remarkably high levels of stereo-^o Dark-Adopted scopic vision and adduction. < ,' , They tend to adopt an abnormal z A Coolminers /A \ fixation in the dark since they Normel subjects / habitually look upwards, and, X1 \/ in addition, the corneal reflexes 20 \"> I \,/are high. Binocular vision of miners with nystagmus.

The classical studies of coal miners' nystagmus were monocular in outlook, but the rise of orthoptics, the work of Campbell and others (1948, 1951), and the suggestion by Browne (1951) that miners' nystagmus may be a type of disuse atrophy of the visual apparatus, have all focused attention upon the binocular vision of the miner with this disease. The objects of the present investigation are to...

Retinal morphology and retinomotor response in Caspian kutum (Rutilus frisii subsp. kutum)

In this study, the morphology and organization of the retina of Caspian kutum and fish response to ambient light as retinomotor reaction was investigated. The Rutilus frisii subsp. kutum is an anadromous fish and important native fish specimen of Caspian Sea. The specimens were obtained from Shahid Ansari Teleost Reproduction and Culture center (Guilan province, Iran). For light and dark adapta...

Transient enhancing of cone electroretinograms following exposure to brighter photopic backgrounds

Normal subjects were first light adapted to a standard photopic background and a control photopic ERG was obtained. The subjects were then light adapted to a brighter background for 5 min at the end of which the luminance was returned to the control background and ERGs were taken at regular intervals. Most of the ERG/OP components were transiently enhanced following the above procedure. Given t...

Dark adaptation in retinal abnormalities.

A common complaint is that of abnormally reduced vision in dark conditions. Whether this refers to visual acuity, glare, or other aspects of visual function must be determined in order to understand the cause of the complaint and if any alleviation of these symptoms can be considered. One aspect to investigate is whether the complaint refers to a delay in adjusting to a dark environment. This m...

Stability of human binocular alignment in the dark and under conditions of nonfixation.

PURPOSE To evaluate the stability of human binocular alignment under conditions of altered fixation and luminance. METHODS Horizontal binocular alignment in 8 healthy orthotropic subjects was measured using infrared video-oculography (VOG) under conditions of binocular fixation and luminance change. Each testing condition was preceded by a binocular fixation period in room light (475 lux) to ...
